18 03 2008

Title: Glory – 1989

Starring: Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman, and Cary Elwes

Director: Edward Zwick

Plot: Colonel Robert G. Shaw is placed in charge of an all-black Union regiment during the Civil War. This movie recounts the true story of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer infantry and their valiant fight on and off the battlefield.

Why it belongs on this list:

  • Broderick, Washington and Elwes perform flawlessly
  • Washington stands out in a emotional, career-defining piece of acting
  • The best Civil War movie
  • Arguably, the best war movie
  • A guy’s head gets blown off by a cannon

Watch this clip: Private Trip (Washington) is whipped for desertion – the best scene Denzel Washington has ever acted in and he doesn’t say a word.
