Title: Shichinin no Samurai / Seven Samurai – 1954

Starring: Toshiro Mifune, Takashi Shimura

Director: Akira Kurosawa

Plot: Farmers of a poor village hire samurai to protect them from bandits who show up each year to pillage the town.

Why it belongs on this list:

  • Great acting from some of Japan’s greatest actors, regardless of any time period
  • Mifune was one of the funniest actors you will see
  • Characters are unforgetable
  • Humor across the cultural divides
  • Spawned one of the greatest westerns, The Magnificent Seven
  • Best foreign film?

Watch this clip: The original trailer – Mifune is the first person to speak and Shimura is the second.
