The Olympic Spirit, part 4

17 08 2008

  • U.S. Men’s indoor volleyball improved to 4-0 in pool A by soundly defeating China three sets to none – One more game until eliminations begin
  • Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal, the ‘other’ American beach volleyball team, survived Spain in two sets – They will meet the defending Olympic champions from Brazil in the quarterfinals
  • The American favorites of Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh beat the Brazilian pair in beach volleyball to advance to the semifinals
  • Tyson Gaye advanced to the semifinals in the 100m – Jamaican Usain Bolt, the current world record holder, looks totally unbeatable
  • Bolt then set the world record and claimed gold in the 100m – He is insanely fast
  • The U.S. was poised to sweep the shot put but would have to settle for simply silver – rookie Christian Cantwell’s mark of 69’2.5″ left him a foot short of gold; Adam Nelson and Reese Hoffa managed to foul themselves out of medals
  • Shalane Flanagan, a UNC alumnus, claimed bronze in the 10,000m – she is only the second U.S. woman to ever medal in the event…oh yeah, and three days earlier she had food poisoning – the two women who finished ahead of her (Ethiopia’s Dibaba and Turkey’s Abeylegesse) recorded the second and third best times in the race’s history
  • U.S. men’s basketball rolled to a 119-82 victory over Spain
  • Roger Federer is finally a gold medalist – He and partner Stanislas Wawrinka defeated a Swedish team in four sets
  • American Vincent Hancock pulled out a tie-breaker shoot-out for gold in the men’s Skeet shoot
  • Dara Torres and teammates claimed silver in the women’s 4x100m medley relay – Torres is 41 years old and has picked up 3 silver medals in Beijing
  • Phelps stands alone with 8 gold medals in these games – Men’s 4x100m medley relay gold for U.S.

I can’t get enough…
